Union County, NC ARES

September 06, 2002 The events of last September 11th have caused every organization in this country dedicated to public service to re-evaluate itself. That is also true of the AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICE (ARES). ARES, as those of you who have been involved in amateur communications for awhile know, is a part of the Field Organization of the AMERICAN RADIO RELAY LEAGUE. ARES consists of amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. ARES has been a part of the amateur radio scene in Union County for many years. Its members have taken part in emergency drills such as those conducted by the Catawba Nuclear Plant, are active with the SKYWARN Weather Network during severe weather conditions, have conducted many public service activities, and as many of you may recall, provided emergency communications following Hurricane Hugo, the explosion in downtown Monroe several years ago and the ice storm two years ago. As mentioned above, the events of the past year have caused changes in ARES and, more changes are on the way. As part of those changes we are asking you to register again as a ARES member or, if you are new to Amateur Radio, to register for the first time. To make registration as easy as possible we ask you to go to the ARES-RACES Union County, NC web site registration at: http://almondtree.com/ares/Registration.asp http://almondtree.com/ares/Registration.asp Fill in the blanks with your personal information and your equipment. When you are done, click on "submit" and your entry will go into the Union County ARES database. While you're there, take a look at the ARES-RACES EMERGENCY PLAN for Union County which is under construction. If you have any questions at all, or have feedback, please give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you. 73! Steve Patterson WA3RTC, Union County Emergency Coordinator (704) 238-9216 Robert DeWitt K4RLD, Ass't Emergency Coordinator (704) 289-2122
